CHRONICLE:
Health care providers have been in our family for many generations. It began in the 1800's with Sikey Thomas, a full blood Choctaw woman who was known as an indian doctor and midwife. Sikey gathered herbs and used indian medicine to heal the sick. It continued with Sikey's granddaughter, Lotta West, (our Nan) who served as the midwife of Boggy Hollow. We lost Nan in February of 2006. She passed away at the home surrounded by friends and family, a few days short of her 100th birthday. Nan entertained us with stories of being called out in the middle of the night, during all kinds of weather, to help deliver the babies born in the little country community where she raised her family. Lotta's daughter, Juanita Noah, became a licensed Practical Nurse and began her nursing career at Latimer County General Hospital in Wilburton in the early 1970's she served others as a community Health Representative for the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma for many years. Currently, Juanita's daughter, Joy Brown, is a Registered Nurse with many years of service in the home care industry. Looking back at several generations of our elders, you can see that meeting the health care need or our sick and infirmed friends and neighbors at home is a known trait of our large family. With our establishment of TRADITIONS HOME CARE, INC. in 2002 we assure new generations will carry on the proud family TRADITION of service to others.
